Deep Dives
Deep Dives are free site visits to selected nonprofit organizations that serve critical socioeconomic needs in Alabama. The CEO describes the work of the organization, its history, challenges, and needs. A tour of the facility provides a deeper understanding. Participants may optionally use a provided checklist to make observations and discuss what they observed and learned. Recommendations can be sent to the CEO. The Organization
Innovation Depot, a 501c3 nonprofit economic development organization, is the epicenter for technology startups and entrepreneurs in the Birmingham region. Operating various programs inside a 140,000 square foot facility, Innovation Depot is the largest tech entrepreneurial support organization in the Southeast United States, with a five-year economic impact of over $1.6 Billion. The CEO
T. Devon Laney is President and CEO of Innovation Depot, Inc. Before being named CEO, Devon served in a number of roles within Innovation Depot after joining the organization in 2005. Prior to joining Innovation Depot, he worked as an analyst with Accenture LLP on various projects with numerous Fortune 500 companies. In addition, Devon is an entrepreneur with experience in the technology space. In the Birmingham community, Devon serves on the Board & Executive Committee of the Birmingham Business Alliance, the Advisory Board of UAB’s Collat School of Business, as well as the Board of Governors for Brookwood Baptist Health System. He also serves as a member of
the Executive Committees of the Birmingham Venture Club, TechBimringham, and BioAlabama. Devon is a member of the 2008 inaugural class of Leadership UAB and the 2010 Class of Leadership Birmingham, and is also a member of the Rotary Club of Birmingham. In 2009 Devon was selected as one of The Birmingham Business Journal’s “Top 40 Under 40”. An accomplished speaker, Devon has lectured at conferences in both the U.S. and internationally on entrepreneurial development, business incubation and innovation, and currently serves as the Board Chairman of the International Business Innovation Association. Mr. Laney has a Master’s Degree in Business Administration and a Bachelor’s Degree in International Business, both from The University of Alabama. Devon also completed studies at the International Business School in Groningen, the Netherlands. He currently lives in Mountain Brook with his wife Meg and their two dogs. Devon also enjoys playing racquetball, coaching tee-ball, and playing music every chance he gets.
