Josh Goldman: Exploring for cobalt: New ethical sources of electrical vehicle battery materials.
KoBold Metals is pioneering Digital Exploration—using big data and cutting-edge science to discover and develop new sources of cobalt, a metal that is necessary for making safe, durable, fast-charging, high-capacity lithium-ion batteries. As electric vehicles (EVs) become widespread, many new cobalt mines will be needed, and the discovery of new cobalt deposits will limit the pace of EV adoption. The incumbent cobalt supply is concentrated mainly in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which has severe labor and ethical challenges. (For background on cobalt corruption in Congo, read Michael Kavanagh's article in The New York Times.) KoBold’s objective is to help enable the EV revolution by finding many new sources of ethical cobalt from reliable jurisdictions.
Josh Goldman, Ph.D. '11 is co-founder and CFO / CTO of KoBold Metals. Previously, Josh was a principal of Phase Change Resources, an oil & gas private equity investment platform, and beforehand Josh was an advisor to top energy companies with the Houston office of McKinsey & Company. He earned a Ph.D. in physics from Harvard for experiments in quantum computing.
