Auburn University’s Center for Architecture and Urban Studies—the Urban Studio—is a teaching and outreach program of Auburn’s College of Architecture, Design and Construction. Students are immersed in the extraordinarily rich “laboratory” of downtown Birmingham and work includes professional seminars and studio design projects that typically focus on community development and urban planning. Our Hosts
Alex Krumdieck is the director of the Urban Studio. He is a principal in the Birmingham-based architecture and interior design firm Krumdieck A + I, which has earned numerous awards for its design work, including recognition by the AIA and the IIDA. Krumdieck earned a Bachelor of Architecture from Auburn, and a Master of Architecture from Georgia Tech. He served as an adjunct instructor several times prior to becoming the Director of the studio.
John J. Pittari, Jr. has a Doctor of Philosophy in Urban Design and Planning, University of Washington; a Master of Urban Planning, Graduate Program in Urban Design, City College of New York; and a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture from the University of Florida. He has been teaching with Auburn since 1996 and for the past few years has been teaching at the Urban Studio. His interest areas in research and practice are urban design, walkability and iconic/historic planned communities.
