INTERN SPOTLIGHT

Cody Chou

Cody Chou is a sophomore living in Lowell House planning to concentrate in Molecular and Cellular Biology. While during his first year at Harvard, he found his courses, classmates, and extracurriculars to be extremely impactful to hiseducational and professional development, it was community service and volunteering that was crucial to his personal development. In January, he joined Phillips' Broopks House's Alternative Winter Break (AWB) program, which worked with The Harvard Club of Alabama on week-long virtual internships with non-profits in Alabama. Cody worked with Build UP, a non-profit early college high school in Birmingham focused on educating, stabilizing, and revitalizing low-income communities and neighborhoods. After AWB ended, Ihe oined the Build UP team part time. "As my first experience doing non-profit work, this opportunity was an insightful experience for me in understanding the education sector in Alabama." he says. Over the summer, he will be working with Build UP in writing grant applications and forming a CDFI application which grants Build UP to provide financial services in low-income communities and to people who lack access to financing.
